PAY FREEZE?? ....MANDATED FURLOUGHS??.....LAYOFFS??....WHAT CAN YOU DO?
The ecomomy is in the tank. The Governor is preaching for pay freezes for all public employees for the next two years! Your Employer is throwing out all kinds of crazy ideas on cost containment and you are a primary source of those ideas. What can I do? I don't have a Union, but my Employer has always been very nice and treated all the employees fairly. Yet, I have for the first time felt some doubt about the decision making and whether or not my position is safe if we are forced to cut positions and people.
The first step in any organizing campaign is having potential members sign a card that is used for the purpose of "showing interest". If your fellow workers are willing to do this, and the Union can get 60 to 75 % or better to sign the cards, a petition will be filed with the Bureau of Mediation Services (BMS) and the BMS will then immediately issue a "MAINTENANCE OF STATUS QUO" order with your Employer. This order effectively prohibits your Employer from making any changes in your current terms and conditions of employment including wages, benefits and in most cases hours of work. From there you have a chance to formulate an organized response to your Employer's proposals on cost containment measures, and if you successfully organize with AFSCME, you will get to NEGOTIATE over any changes, prior to implementation!
DON'T WAIT UNTIL IT IS TOO LATE....contact AFSCME Council 65 today to protect what you have worked so hard for, for what you deserve to maintain, and for a voice in your very own well being.
